Since its establishment in March, 1953, the Department of English Language and Literature has offered master's and doctoral degree in the areas of English Language and English Literature.

The Department has expanded its programs to encompass English Education for master's and dotoral degrees from the Fall semester of 2005. Degree candidates of the Department are trained to understand and analyze English literature, English linguistics, and English education. Those who concentrate on English education are trained to analyze and apply theories of the field to English education, to be equipped with broad understanding of humanistic values including those of English linguistics and literature.

Objectives

  • The Department of English Language and Literature aims at realizing the educational motto of Chung-Ang University: Die in Honor, Live for Truth. Specifically, the Department is designed to train students to do their own research independently by offering in-depth programs in the areas of English linguistics, English literature, and English education. English linguistics offers courses in theoretical linguistics including syntax, semantics, morphology and phonology/phonetics and in applied linguistics including language acquisition, corpus linguistics, and computational linguistics. English literature offers courses in poetry, novels, and other literary genres. Students of the field are expected to analyze and critically review works of these areas, thereby broadening their understanding of the field.
  • English education offers courses in teaching methods, material development, language acquisition, principles of English education, evaluation, and intercultural communication. Students of this field are expected to be trained as researchers and practitioners of English education.
